Portola Hotel offers wired and wireless internet access for a fee. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the hotel lobby.

Portola Hotel & Spa and the local Monterey Regional Airport do not currently offer currency exchange services. We recommend that you check with your bank to exchange or order foreign currency prior to arrival.

At check in, we only accept Credit Cards. Cash payments are only accepted during check out.

Tipping at hotels is a personal decision, but here are some guidelines to consider:

  • Valet/Parking Attendant: Tip $1-5 when your car is delivered. Tipping when your car is parked is optional.
  • Bellstaff/Porters: Tip $1-5 per bag when you are escorted to your room (especially if your luggage is heavy or they prepare your room or show you around). Tip the same if you request bell staff service checking out.
  • Doorstaff: Tip $1-2 for getting a taxi. If they unload your luggage, tip in proportion to the amount and weight.
  • Concierge: Tip from $5-10 depending on how involved the service (booking a restaurant versus hard-to-get tickets) or a lump sum upon departure.
  • Housekeeping: Tip $1-5 per night. The tip should be left daily (preferably in an envelope or with a note so that it’s clear it’s for housekeeping).
  • Delivery of Special Items: For special requests (like an extra blanket), tip $2 for one item, $1 for more. Tipping is not required for someone fixing something broken or bringing something missing.
  • Bartender: Tip 15-20% of the total beverage tab.
  • Waiter/Waitress: Tip 15% of the total bill, up to 20% for exceptional service. Automatic gratuity often applies to groups of 6 or more.
  • Spa Service: Tip 15–20% of the total cost of your treatment.

There are a variety of restaurants within walking distance of Portola Hotel for American style cuisine, including Peter B’s (Burgers), Jacks Monterey (California Coastal Cuisine), Rosine’s (comfort food) Giannis (pizza/Italian) and Fisherman’s Wharf (seafood).

Breakfast is not included, unless booked in advance with overnight accommodations like Portola’s Breakfast for Two Package.

Monterey, California enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild, sunny weather year-round. Here's what to expect by season:

Winter: Cooler and wetter, with an average of 17 inches of rainfall annually. January and February are the coldest and wettest months.

Spring & Fall: Warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures in the 70s. April through June sees less rainfall.

Summer: Cool and foggy mornings, followed by clear afternoons. Coastal fog may linger in Monterey and Carmel, typically clearing by midday. July is the hottest month, with highs averaging 77°F and lows around 60°F.

Travel

There are several attractions walking distance from Portola Hotel, including Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. To experience Pebble Beach’s 17-Mile Drive, Big Sur, Carmel Valley, and beyond, a car is recommended.

Pay phones are not available in Monterey. Purchasing International Prepaid Phone Cards is recommended.

Driving from Monterey to L.A. along the Big Sur coast in one day is possible when Highway 1 is fully open, but the trip would be more enjoyable over two days. The drive is approximately 300 miles of winding, scenic coastline, which can take 8+ hours depending on stops and traffic. Given the winding nature of the route and the desire to enjoy the breathtaking views, it's recommended to break the trip into two days to fully experience the beauty of Big Sur and avoid a rushed drive. Parts of Highway 1 could be closed due to road closures.

Yes, it is possible to drive from Monterey to Santa Barbara along the Big Sur coast in one day when Highway 1 is fully open, but it will be a long and scenic journey. The drive is approximately 230 miles and can take 6+ hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and how many stops you make to enjoy the views. While it's doable in one day, it's a good idea to start early to allow plenty of time for breaks, sightseeing, and meals along the way. To fully enjoy the stunning beauty of the coastline, consider breaking up the trip with an overnight stop in Big Sur or another scenic spot. Parts of Highway 1 could be closed due to road closures.

Portola Hotel is walking distance to Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, restaurants, wine tasting, and more. Uber, Lyft, and taxi services are all available. Pricing varies. Taxi services will need to be arranged in advance. You will not be able to hail a cab from the road.

Public transportation is provided by Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) for a fee. MST provides bus service to the greater Monterey and Salinas areas as far south as Paso Robles and as far north as Watsonville and Gilroy. For pricing and schedules, visit mst.org.

Portola Hotel & Spa does not provide an airport shuttle. Uber, Lyft, taxi, and rental car services are available in the area. Shuttle services to San Jose and San Francisco Airports are available through Groome Transportation.

San Francisco approximately 2h 11m (119 mi) from Monterey. Visit the San Francisco to see iconic landmarks, explore charming bay area neighborhoods, and Napa Valley Wineries to the north.

Santa Barbara is approximately 4h 8m (237 mi) from Monterey. Visit Santa Barbara to experience wineries, fine dining, spas, and stunning Mediterranean-style architecture.
